I started my website and web marketing business way back in 1999 after the birth of Google on Sept 4th, 1998. At that time the web was 10 years old and needed a lot of parental control and gentle coaxing to 'grow up the right way'.

Today the web is 25 years old after Sir Tim Berners-Lee wrote a paper on March 12, 1989 proposing an "information management" system that became the conceptual and architectural structure for the Web.

I remember when I was trying to convince a local Landscape Designer to get an email ID. He laughed and said that is not going to happen in his lifetime since 100% of his customers call him from the yellow pages. 5 years later in 2004, he was sitting in my office revisiting this idea of a website and an email ID for his company. Well, things have changed quite rapidly in this field. The graph below will prove that the growth in this industry is like no other.

So has the growth stabilized? Hardly. As a small business owner, the learning curve is still pretty steep.

Besides having an updated website that is responsive to all kinds of mobile devices, your company content has to be sprinkled on various social media platforms including Google Plus that Google is covertly forcing every business owner to use and of course you as a business owner have to gently coax your target market to ‘engage with you’ on the various social media without sounding salesy or spammy so that Señor Google will not punish you in any manner.

Now that the web is 25 years old, Google will be giving us behavioral and etiquette lessons also on ‘how to behave in public without being a glasshole’ with the introduction of the latest Google innovation ‘Google Glass’.

As small business owners, you do need to educate yourself on how users will be browsing the web via a new browser built for Google Glass. Your target market will be searching for your business via the Glass either by talking to Glass or ‘swiping’ and ‘tapping’ Glass for information to appear before their eyes. Web browsing on Google Glass from August through December 2013 grew 735%, with 54% of the searching and viewing on media and entertainment sites. Browsing on retail sites only contributed about 3%. Most of the content being consumed is news, sports and media. This will soon increase to searching for local small business owners. So, let’s get ready and make appointments with the optometrist to get our eyes sharpened to see better, ears checked for clarity just in case Glass is too soft for us, and our brains and minds open to adapt to the next generation of marketing techniques!
