Google just rolled out a new set of privacy changes to its users beginning the 11th of October - this time it's about showing their profile names and photos in Google advertisements across its various platforms. Google had announced about the privacy changes which have been met with mixed responses, mostly protesting the search giant's move, among the users and industry experts so far.

What does it mean for the regular users?

Google made an announcement last month to its users that it will begin showing their profile names and photos in its ads in its web search results and other properties of Google - such as maps, reviews and other commercial contexts. Google says that the user information may be shown in the ad if the user had previously +1ed the link associated with the ad, reviewed the product/service that is promoted, commented on it or followed the brand.

However, the display of user information will still be limited to the privacy settings of the user's Google account - meaning, the user's profile name and photo will appear in the ad only to 'the people [the user has] chosen to share that content with'. The idea is that ads can gain better credibility when someone you already know has an opinion on it - the good old word-of-mouth marketing.

It is interesting to note that Google+ is not the first social media platform to show user information in ads. Facebook helped pioneer the idea of shared endorsements by displaying user profile names and photos in its ads. Twitter also displays user handles into ads shown to their followers, which say that the promoted accounts were also followed by those other users. However, these Twitter handles can be pseudonyms in most cases, unlike in Facebook or Google+.

What does it mean for your business?

Simply put, get a Google+ business page and get your customers '+1' you. Your existing customers can also now influence your advertisements across Google's platforms. Imagine your ad being shown to a potential customer, along with a favorable review by a friend of her. Or a searcher looking at your ad that was '+1'ed by a couple of his friends. Or a user looking at your display advertisement and notices that a friend is following your brand.

The key is to develop a good presence in Google+, and to make sure that your customers find you there. Floating above the competition is always a tough challenge for small businesses - a challenge that we have been successfully tackling for our clients for years. LocalBizNetwork's clients have well established, verified Google pages for their businesses which help them stand out from the competition - in organic search as well as paid search on Google.

Guarding Your Online Reputation

In October, one of our clients' Facebook page was flooded with smear posts from an anonymous user. LBN tracked it down in an hour, and systematically arrested what would have been a series of smear campaigns against the client. The online reputation of our clients is of top most priority to us, and our years of experience and expertise help us predict and prevent reputation issues before they arise.
